Fantastic to show the water works already constructed by the Romans. Crowds were fine. Must-see among other historical attractions in the area. Too bad the fast-lane queue was quite crowded and when scanning we got the message that tickets were already used. Was solved after contact with booking agency but took time.

Went with Royal Balloon Cappadocia on a comfort flight, very professionally organised from go to woe. Flight was perfect, quiet, smooth, had the best experience. Perfect precision landing back on trailer, piloted by Omur Sekeryapan. Champagne toast to finish off, one great lifetime experience not to be missed.

Just as they say. They pick you up at the hotel. They take you to the place where the balloon is already being inflated. You take a tea or coffee with a piece of pastry while you take pictures and see the rest of balloons (dozens) that begin to rise. They put you in the basket and enjoy an unforgettable flight!

This guided tour was absolutely worth it. Our guide was knowledgeable, patient, and passionate about the history of both the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. They explained everything clearly, from the architecture to the cultural and religious significance, and answered everyone’s questions without rushing.

The Basilica Cistern was an amazing piece of infrastructure built by the Romans. Our group was small, which meant we got quality time with our guide, and to ask as many questions as we wanted! He cleverly hung back from the crowd of cruise tourists in a quiet area, and gave us the specific items to look out for, before allowing us to wander around at our own pace. A thoughtful and informative tour! Would definitely recommend.

We were able to take the time and explore the Basilica and our guide was really good at explaining the history behind this beautiful place. Not too crowded also!

An underground relic in Istanbul

Built in the 6th century under Emperor Justinian I, the Basilica Cistern once supplied water to the Great Palace of Constantinople. Today, it’s one of Istanbul’s most atmospheric historic sites, famed for its forest of columns, the Weeping Column, and the enigmatic Medusa Heads.

TL;DR

  • Ways to explore: Choose a self-guided entry ticket with a multilingual audio guide or join a 1-hour guided tour for deeper context. Night entry offers a quieter, crowd-light visit.
  • Additional access: Combine your visit with nearby sites through combo guided tours or super combo tickets covering Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, and Topkapi Palace.
  • Unique experiences: After-dark entry provides a calmer, atmospheric way to see the Medusa heads and illuminated columns without daytime crowds.
  • Queues and access: All tickets include skip-the-ticket-line entry; security remains mandatory and may take 10 to 20 minutes during peak hours (midday and weekends, between June and August).
  • When to book: Summer and weekend slots sell out quickly; night tickets and combos have the widest availability and best flexibility.
  • Good to know: Visits usually take 20 to 40 minutes. The walkway is uneven and dimly lit; wheelchair users may need assistance around corners. The exit is on a different street (Alemdar Caddesi) from the entrance, so allow extra time to navigate back.
  • Best upgrade: Super combo tickets offer the strongest value, letting you see multiple Sultanahmet landmarks with skip-the-line access and smooth, guided transitions.

Step underground into the quiet

Enter from Yerebatan Caddesi and descend the staircase into a cool, low-lit chamber where columns rise from shallow water and the sound of slow drips replaces the noise of Sultanahmet above.

Walk the raised pathway at your pace

Follow the wooden walkway past rows of weathered columns and reflective pools. The dim light and echoing space create a stillness that makes the scale of this ancient reservoir feel immediate.

Learn the stories behind the columns

With an audio guide or a guided tour, hear how the cistern once supplied water to Constantinople and how recycled columns from earlier temples now stand in this underground hall.

Pause at the Medusa heads

Reach the far corner to see the two carved Medusa blocks, one tilted and one inverted. Guided tours explain why these stones were reused here and the legends that formed around them.

Experience the Cistern after dark (upgrade)

Night entry offers a quieter circuit with fewer visitors, allowing longer moments at the Medusa heads and more time to take in the glowing columns and still reflections.

Extend your visit with combos

Some tickets continue above ground to Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, or Topkapi Palace, linking the Cistern’s hidden engineering to the monuments it once helped sustain.

Things to know before visiting the Basilica Cistern

  • The Basilica Cistern sees heavy foot traffic, especially from June to August, when millions of tourists flock to Istanbul for the summer holidays. Bypass the crowds with skip-the-line tickets and head straight inside.
  • Please note that these priority entry tickets only allow you to skip the ticketing lines; you will still need to go through a security check before entering.
  • If you want to avoid the heaviest crowds entirely, consider the Basilica Cistern night entry ticket. After dark, the Cistern is far quieter, giving you more room to explore the glowing columns and Medusa heads at your own pace.
  • Explore independently with a multilingual audio guide or join a Basilica Cistern guided tour to learn about its role as an ancient water reservoir in Constantinople.
  • Located in Sultanahmet, the Cistern is easy to pair with nearby attractions like the Blue Mosque or Hagia Sophia. Save big with Istanbul super combo tickets or guided combo tours that bundle multiple sites, include skip-the-line access, and offer seamless, expert-led sightseeing without the hassle of coordinating separate tickets.
  • You can also complement your visit with a 90-minute Bosphorus cruise, letting you move from the Cistern’s calm underground world to open-air views of Istanbul’s palaces, mosques, and iconic bridges from the water.
  • The site is partially accessible with a lift near the exit on Alemdar Street, but the walking path inside is uneven and slippery. Wheelchair users may need assistance, especially around corners or in low-light areas.
  • The exit from the Basilica Cistern leads to Alemdar Caddesi, a different street from the entrance on Yerebatan Caddesi. Retrace your steps along Alemdar Caddesi to return to Yerebatan Caddesi and the Hagia Sophia area.

Must-see features

Basilica Cistern Tickets

Stone columns

The ceiling of the Basilica Cistern is supported by 336 tall marble columns, each 9 meters high. Check out the interesting designs and strange patterns on these pillars, which are even older than the Basilica itself.

Basilica Cistern Tickets

Medusa’s Heads

The Basilica Cistern has two Medusa heads at the base of two columns, with one positioned horizontally and the other inverted. These ancient artifacts capture attention with their unsettling aura and unclear historical background.

Basilica Cistern Tickets

Weeping Pillar

To commemorate the sacrifice of 7000 slaves during the construction of the cistern, a standalone pillar had been carved. Named the ‘Weeping Pillar’, it has trees, branches, and peacocks carved on its surface. It also resembles a hen’s eye with tears and angled branches.

Water reflections

Nowadays, the Basilica Cistern only has a shallow water level, letting visitors see the old structures that used to be underwater. The calm water creates beautiful reflections of the dimly-lit structures.
